GLOBAL FOOD CONSUMPTION PATTERNS

According to the USDA, about half of American adults have at least one diet-related disease such as cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes. And around the world, many children aged 6–23 months don’t receive foods from five or more food groups on a daily basis (known as minimum diet diversity). Being aware of our consumption patterns is the first step to achieving better nutrition for all.

The average American adult is 68% deficient in fiber

and 50% deficient in fruit.

American adults ages 20-64 consume more than 100% of the recommended values for the displayed groups. Some of these groups and nutrients, such as saturated fat are those which the USDA recommends to keep to a mnimum.

The map below shows the percentage of children ages 6-23 months who received food from at least five food groups the previous day. Evidently, most children are not meeting the minimum dietary diversity standards.
